IDB Approves $20 Million Emergency Program to Restore Infrastructure After Storm Julia

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will finance an emergency program with $20 million in response to the effects of storm “Julia”, which in October 2022 affected some 200 municipalities in the Central American country with severe flooding.

This was announced by the IDB office in Tegucigalpa, in a statement, in which it also noted that the objective is to restore part of the road, social and flood protection infrastructure that was damaged by the climate phenomenon.

“The storm, which affected almost 200 municipalities in the country, caused the death of four people, caused damage to homes, bridges and roads, and caused serious damage to the productive sectors,” adds the official information.

The program approved by the IDB Board of Executive Directors aims to support the transition process of the affected population towards the recovery of their regular social and economic activities, once again facilitating their access to the provision of basic public services.

According to the IDB, it is also planned to finance activities that generate benefits for families and the economy of areas affected by the floods.

These activities include the rehabilitation of the service on approximately 100 sections of main national routes, secondary routes and local roads, as well as approximately 30 bridges, bridges and fords.

In addition, flood control works (banks and canals) affected by the storm and social services such as schools and drinking water systems will be rehabilitated.

According to IDB projections, the direct beneficiaries of the program total around 1.2 million people. EFE
