Idalia: Catastrophic Hurricane Expected to Hit Florida’s Gulf Coast

NEW YORK (Dagbladet): The storm “Idalia” blows in towards the Gulf coast of Florida. The hurricane is expected to make landfall in the Big Bend region.

– “Idalia” will have a catastrophic effect through floods and inundations. Residents in these areas should follow all advice and evacuation orders from local authorities, write National Hurricane Center in an update at midnight Norwegian time.

Already last night, “Idalia” had strengthened to a category 2 hurricane with winds of 160 kilometers per hour. However, it is expected to grow in strength to a Category 3 hurricane and have winds of as much as 120 miles per hour when it hits the northwest coast of Florida around 6 a.m. local time – about 12 noon Norwegian time.

– Extremely dangerous

Supermoon

A supermoon can also contribute to making the flood situation extra bad.

A supermoon is the coincidence that occurs when a full moon is at the same time at the smallest distance between the Earth and the moon in the moon’s elliptical orbit.

“Idalia” will probably lead to violent storm surge along the coast, and the supermoon will intensify this. According to the National Hurricane Center, water levels could rise by as much as 4.6 meters.

– I would say that the timing is very bad for this moon, says meteorologist Brian Haines of the National Weather Service in South Carolina, to AP.

According to the warnings, the extreme weather will move from southwest Florida and northeast. It is expected to hit the coasts of Georgia and the Carolinas on Thursday and Friday.

Thunderstorms, snow, strong winds and floods have hit the state of California recently. The storm is in its eleventh day, and has so far claimed fourteen lives and left thousands without power, according to CNN. Video: Tiktok / #california Show more

– Rocket fuel

In addition to the supermoon, very high temperatures in the sea also contribute to “Idalia” growing so strongly.

– It’s 88-89 degrees (31-32 degrees Celsius) where the storm is, so it’s rocket fuel for the storm, says hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach at Colorado State University to AP.

22 counties in Florida are now under evacuation orders, and Governor Ron DeSantis expects the hurricane to cause power outages and massive destruction.

– Unparalleled

– You really have to go now. Now is the time for that, he says at a press conference on Tuesday evening.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida describes “Idalia” as “an unprecedented event” as no major hurricanes have ever been recorded in this particular part of Florida.

– You really have to go back to the late 19th century to find a storm of this magnitude that will come in where this one looks to come in tomorrow. We don’t really have any historical analogy in anyone’s memory so this is likely to do a lot of damage, says DeSantis.
