The Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) encourages all health services in Indonesia to analyze patient data related to respiratory tract infections or pneumonia in children.
“Hospitals, clinics and health centers in Indonesia need to analyze data on the number of patients/visits and deaths due to respiratory tract infections/pneumonia from time to time, both inpatients, outpatients and emergency installations,” said Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, Chair of the Central Management IDAI in a statement released BetweenSaturday (2/12/2023).
According to him, by analyzing data, it can provide better insight for developing strategies for preventing and controlling this disease.
“So that it can be reported and carried out early anticipation if a significant increase in the number of cases is found,” said Piprim.
Piprim said that in early November 2023 China reported an increase in the number of patients with respiratory tract infections. At the end of November 2023, there was a reported cluster of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in Northern China.
However, he continued, it was not clear whether this incident was related to the increase in cases of respiratory system infections reported previously, or was an isolated incident.
“The report from China identified several bacteria and viruses that cause it, namely Mycoplasma Pneumoniae, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS COV-2, but there is no information regarding the severity of the disease and the death rate due to the disease,” explained Piprim.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia there is currently no official data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health and tracking of germs that cause pneumonia (except influenza viruses) in children, so there is no definite data as to whether there has been an increase in the number of pneumonia cases due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae or not.
Even so, IDI reminded that Indonesia still has to be alert regarding pneumonia cases, but there is no need to cause panic in the community.
Apart from that, surveillance of respiratory system infections in children (including pneumonia) in Indonesia needs to be further improved, including increasing facilities from the government to provide examination facilities to identify germs that cause pneumonia in children, including Streptococcus pneumonia, RSV, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and others.
“Mycoplasma pneumonia is not a new germ, and pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae usually causes mild pneumonia symptoms that can be treated with antibiotics,” he said.
IDAI also asks the public to increase clean and healthy living habits, including the habit of washing hands and wearing masks.
“Exclusive breastfeeding, complete vaccination and high doses of vitamin A are also very important to prevent babies and children from pneumonia,” said Piprim. (ant/iss)
