IDAI Says Diabetic Children Are Still Safe To Inject Covid-19 Vaccines

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

General Chairperson of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, said that children with diabetes mellitus can still receive vaccine injections Covid-19.

“If diabetes is under control, blood sugar is controlled, there is no obstacle to being vaccinated against Covid-19,” said Piprim, Saturday (11/13).

Piprim stated that the Covid-19 vaccination should be given to people with diabetes, because they fall into the vulnerable category.

“In fact, they need to be vaccinated more because diabetes is a significant comorbidity if they get Covid. It can be severe later,” he said.

Diabetes screening is necessary

On the other hand, the Executive Director of the International Pediatric Association (IPA), Aman Pulungan, stated that parents should be aware of diabetes through screening.

It is safe to give examples of common symptoms that can be observed, namely when children eat a lot, drink, urinate regularly, but lose weight.

“The first thing to do is check blood sugar,” said Aman.

“Then, if you are fat, you canscreeningMoreover, there is a mark on the neck that is black like a foot, then on the black armpit. It’s insulin resistant.”

Skinny kids can get diabetes too

Piprim continued that diabetes is not only common in obese children. Children who have a thin stature also do not rule out diabetes. Generally, children with thin stature will get type 1 diabetes.

“Thin children can suffer from type 1 diabetes mellitus. So, be careful if the child eats a lot, drinks a lot, urinates frequently, and continues to lose weight,” said Piprim.

Head of the IDAI Endocrinology Coordination Work Unit (UKK), Muhammad Faizi, added that children with type 1 diabetes mellitus are usually thin.

This is because fat reserves in the body are depleted because insulin reserves are lacking. This condition is different from type 2 diabetes mellitus, where patients tend to be overweight, even classified as obese.

“In type 1 diabetes mellitus, the patient’s condition is insulin deficiency due to pancreatic beta damage. In this condition, insulin looks for other sources, namely fat, so the child tends to be thin,” said Piprim.
