Diabetes mellitus is not only suffered by adults, but can also occur in children, especially those who are overweight or obese. Chairman of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, said children with diabetes mellitus can still get the COVID-19 vaccine.
“If diabetes is under control, blood sugar is controlled, there is no obstacle to being vaccinated against Covid-19,” said Piprim, quoted from the CNN Indonesia page, Monday (15/11/2021).
In fact, according to him, vaccination should be given to people with diabetes. This is because they belong to a vulnerable group of people.
“In fact, they need to be vaccinated more because diabetes is a significant comorbidity if they get COVID. It can be severe later,” he said.
Piprim disclosed, diabetes is not only common in obese children. But there is a possibility that the child has a thin stature and is affected by diabetes. Generally, children with thin stature will get type 1 diabetes.
“Thin children can suffer from type 1 diabetes mellitus. So, be aware if the child eats a lot, drinks a lot, urinates frequently, and his body weight continues to decrease,” he said.
Head of the IDAI Endocrinology Coordination Work Unit (UKK), Muhammad Faizi added that children with type 1 diabetes mellitus are usually thin. Because fat reserves are depleted due to reduced insulin stocks in the body.
This condition is judged to be different from type 2 diabetes mellitus. Patients tend to be overweight, even classified as obese.
“In type 1 diabetes mellitus, the patient’s condition is insulin deficiency due to pancreatic beta damage. In this condition, insulin looks for other sources, namely fat, so the child tends to be thin,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the International Pediatric Association (IPA), Aman Pulungan, explained that parents need to be aware of diabetes through routine screening.
He further details the common symptoms of diabetes in children that can be observed. Some of them when children eat a lot, drink, urinate regularly, but lose weight.
“The first thing to do is check blood sugar,” said Aman.
“Then, if you are fat, you can also be screened, especially if there are signs on the neck that are black like dirt, then black armpits. That’s insulin resistant,” he continued.
