IDAI Reveals the Importance of Basic Childhood Immunizations Before Getting the Covid-19 Vaccine

Fimela.com, Jakarta Data shows coverage immunization in children in the world fell by 3 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. In Indonesia alone, basic immunization fell to 11.1 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, from 93.7 percent to now only 82.5 percent.

According to the General Chairperson of the IDAI Central Executive, Dr Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, SpA(K) explained that the coverage immunization decreased during the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, he said several diseases that can be prevented by immunization (PD3I) often occur in children.

Even dr. Piprim conveyed that before immunizing against COVID-19, it is best to immunize to prevent Extraordinary Events (KLB) such as measles or polio from occurring. So he said, diseases that have been controlled can reappear if basic immunizations are forgotten.

“Basic immunization should not be forgotten to prevent various diseases for children. When vaccination has become a government program, usually what is prevented is including PD3I which can cause disability or death. Covid-19 is indeed very spread, but diseases such as measles, diphtheria and polio is much more dangerous for children. If we ignore it, outbreaks will occur,” he said at a seminar from the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) with the theme “Multisectoral Support to Pursue Immunization.

Head of UKK IDAI tropical infections and diseases dr. Anggraini Alam said that dangerous diseases could be prevented by immunization. In Indonesia alone, there are 13 vaccines plus one for the Covid-19 vaccine, so a total of 14 vaccines are available.

“There are 13 diseases that can become epidemics during this pandemic, namely diphtheria, bull neck, measles, German measles rubella affecting the fetus, chickenpox, and many more. So the 13 immunizations are important to prevent outbreaks. make the disease easy to move,” said dr. Anggraini.

In addition, if immunization is not carried out immediately, it is feared that apart from becoming an outbreak, new diseases such as COVID-19 will appear. If the child does not immunize, then if the child is sick it will cause various complications that occur monthly or even yearly.

“An example of foam measles occurs for 5 years or even more than 10 years. Then if the child has brain damage so that he is disabled he can’t do any activities and then he dies,” he concluded.

Until November 2021, a report from the Director General of Disease Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Health in 2021 had recorded new cases of diphtheria in 23 children. 54 case reports of measles, 91 case reports of Rubella, and 80 percent of incomplete immunization status or unclear vaccine history.
