At least two deaths, severe material damage, torrential rains and more than a million people without electricity is the initial balance of the passage of Hurricane Ida through the United States, which degraded to a tropical storm after making landfall.

However, the authorities fear that the inspection of the damage this Monday could offer a more accurate picture of the impact.

“Daylight will bring horrible images as the damage is assessed,” tweeted Shauna Sanford, communications director for the governor of Louisiana.

President Joe Biden had previously said that Ida would be “life threatening” and the National Hurricane Center has warned that heavy rains can still cause flooding in parts of the state.
