The id Tech engine is often recognized as one of the most optimized engines in the gaming industry. The latest version of this engine has been used in games such as Doom Eternal, and id Software has also used it in recent installments of the Wolfenstein series.

In addition to its impressive visuals, id Tech received high marks for its ability to run efficiently on a variety of hardware. For example, games such as Doom Eternal showed excellent performance even on budget computers.

Given these qualities, id Tech can compare with the best engines in the gaming industry. However, apparently, id Software is already developing a new version, as Timur222 pointed out, drawing attention to the profile of one of the developers on LinkedIn.

Philip Hammer is a programmer at id Software, who has been working in the team for more than three years. A mention of id Tech 8 was found in his profile, which likely hints that the studio’s next project will use a new generation of this engine.

As noted, Doom Eternal was one of the first games to use id Tech 7. This engine was surprisingly well optimized and delivered consistent performance despite the use of graphics-intensive technologies such as ray tracing.

Judging by the history of the engine’s development, in the coming years id Tech 8 may become a competitor to Unreal Engine 5 as a revolutionary game engine.

Id Software has not been involved in the gaming industry for quite some time. Since the release of Doom Eternal, the studio has supported the game with DLC content and several expansions, but Doom Eternal is almost four years old.

Therefore, the studio’s next release, in addition to the new version of id Tech, may be closer than expected. Since id Software has already provided its engine to studios like MachineGames, Wolfenstein developer Indiana Jones could be the first game to feature id Tech 8.

Rumors and listings also indicate that after the last game in the Wolfenstein franchise was released in 2019, a new one will be released. Given Wolfenstein’s history with the engine, a potential new installment would likely use id Tech 8 as well.
