Roger Federer turns 40 on August 8 and many are wondering if he can still compete at the highest level. This week there was great anticipation for his return to Geneva, in what was his first try on the red.
The Swiss phenomenon wet his debut on the chopped brick as badly as possible, yielding in three sets to the irresistible step Spaniard Pablo Andujar. The 20-time Grand Slam champion’s collapse in the last game is iconic, when he suffered three games of four consecutive games, which gave him a break.
The former world number 1 will therefore appear at Roland Garros with very few matches in his legs, an aspect that worries his fans about a month and a half after the start of Wimbledon. In a recent interview with the portal “Industria del Tenis”, two-time Roland Garros finalist Alex Corretja discussed King Roger’s chances in 2021.
In the opinion of the Spaniard, the Swiss wants to end his career in the best possible way.
Corretja opens up on Roger Federer
“I would be surprised if he (Roger Federer) played for several more years,” said Alex Corretja.
“I think Federer is getting ready to say goodbye big and getting ready to come back to compete with everything. This is what you are looking for. ” Alex Corretja has also claimed he sees Rafael Nadal playing until he is at least 37 years old.
At that point, Corretja expects the 34-year-old to add even more titles to his Grand Slam tally. “Keep in mind that Rafael Nadal is still at least two years old and he will take the opportunity to try to add a Grand Slam,” Corretja said.
“I see him qualified for that.” Being sponsored by Japanese retail giant Uniqlo, Roger Federer naturally has a close connection to Japan. And during the Asian leg of the ATP 2018 season, he made a pit stop in Japan to visit his new sponsors.
He has made a full trip with his family and will travel to Japan again this year for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In a recent interview with Uniqlo, Federer revealed some of the “firsts” he achieved on his trip in Japan. He had never visited Kyoto before and had never taken the bullet train either.
It was a personal goal for Federer to visit Japan and show it to his family. “It was a great experience, to be honest. This is my first time in Kyoto, the first time I was also on the bullet train. And my family or my wife and we have always talked a lot about traveling in Japan. ”
