‘ICs are expected to be able to return to normal strength in early May’ | NOW

At the beginning of May, the intensive care units can run at regular strength again. The Outbreak Management Team (OMT) writes this in a letter to the Ministry of Health on Thursday, according to reports RTL News.

According to the letter, 1,200 people would still need an IC bed on 1 May, which means that the ICs will be able to run at regular power again. 700 of those 1,200 beds would be needed for a COVID-19 patient.

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, all ICs have been expanded in recent weeks, currently there are 2,400 beds available.

The number of Dutch corona patients on IC has fallen for the fourth day in a row on Wednesday. A total of 1,279 patients are in intensive care. In four days, the total number of corona patients requiring intensive care has decreased by more than a hundred.

Ernst Kuipers, chairman of the National Network Acute Care (LNAZ), predicted on Wednesday that “it would take six to eight weeks before we arrive in the Netherlands on an IC occupation that we normally have on average in the Netherlands.”
