NEW YORK – The Historic Restaurant 21 Club New York City is closing and is one of the most recent businesses to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In light of the ongoing global crisis and the anticipated extended recovery period for the hotel industry, the difficult decision was made that it will not be feasible to reopen the Club 21 in its current form for the foreseeable future, “a spokesman said Saturday.
The business has been closed since March after Governor Andrew Cuomo closed all bars and restaurants due to the virus.
The restaurant’s spokesperson said they are “exploring potential opportunities that will allow 21 Club remain a viable long-term operation, while retaining its distinctive character. “
“At this early stage, we are not ready to announce any final concept or deadline, but the vision is that 21 Club It will always remain an important social and cultural center and icon of New York, one that is well positioned to fulfill its role in the exciting future of the city when the time comes, “the statement read.
21 Club It opened its doors in January 1930 during the Prohibition era and has become known as a gathering place for famous diners. A wrought iron gate stands outside the venue and a group of ornamental horsemen is displayed on the balcony.
The restaurant describes itself as a “place where celebrities and captains of the industry have been drinking and drinking for more than 80 years.”
The announcement comes after Cuomo said he will be suspending indoor dining again starting Monday.
“If we don’t slow down the spread and overwhelm the hospital system, we hit a red zone … then all the restaurants are zeroed indoors and outdoors. That’s the worst case,” Cuomo said at a news conference. on Friday.
