Iconic Haitian Musician Zouzoul Laid to Rest – Cubano Leads Farewell Tribute

On Saturday, Cubano expressed his final farewell to Zouzoul.

I have just returned from the funeral of Jean Michel St Victor known as Zouzoul, the sky has been sad and dark for several days in Broward. Indeed, it was this morning of December 16, 2023 in the presence of around one hundred and fifty people at All the Catholic Church (Plantation) that the funeral of Jean Michel St Victor was sung in a ceremony carried out in complete sobriety without incense nor flowers.

Lover of the Compass, I went to pay tribute to this icon of Haitian music who over the last sixty years has rocked the country with his baritone voice with pieces such as la belle Caroline, Ozanana etc. I did not know Zouzoul during his lifetime but Jacques St Louis, a neighbor on Rue Tiremasse, served us to the heart’s content every afternoon this album on which is recorded the music On the move by Skah Shah number one, which I I ended up knowing all the titles on this disc by heart.

As a lover of the Compass, I went to meet my musician and radio host friends to tell them that music is an industry that absolutely can develop if the actors get involved. I went to pay homage to the Zouzoul icon but also to tell my friends who are Compass Lover like me that state and private actors are working hard for the recognition of the Compass as a recognized World Heritage Site.

I saw people including Cubano, Georges Loubert Chancy, Yvon André dit Capy, Dof Chancy, Luidjy from Zig Zag, Ralph Condé, Rodney Noël, the Sak Cho team, Alix Michel and Sony Zulerion. Finally, I had fun chatting with Osselito Désir and especially around this Aigle Noir and Violette match at the Sylvio Cator stadium which we will always remember.

Sixty years of music and musical production, Zouzoul was a heritage that should have inspired us to do better but, as soon as I start thinking about The Lamb and what has become of Mariani who we are about to lose before long, my hopes are shrinking.

Zouzoul left, at church this morning, there was only one Kirye Eleison and outside, the sky was sad and dark.
