Iconic Cuban Singer Olga Chorens Dies at Age 99

The iconic Cuban singer Olga Chorens died on the afternoon of this Friday, September 22, at her home in Miami, United States, at the age of 99. Her daughter Lisette Álvarez announced the news through her social networks.

His career

The artist, born in Havana on February 7, 1924, Chorens starred alongside her husband, the announcer and presenter Tony Álvarez, starting in 1951, in a well-known live program on the CMQ-6 channel of Cuban Television. One of the children’s songs that they popularized was “El Ratoncito Miguel.”

Both were also part of the Río de la Plata orchestra. Because of how well they combined artistically and the sentimental connection that existed between them, the duo was also known as The Happy Couple or the Ideal Couple.

Chorens was also linked to cinema and participated in the musical romance films, directed by Enrique Caparrós in 1941, and Cuba canta y baila, by Manuel de la Pedrosa, a decade later. After the triumph of Fidel Castro’s revolution, they decided to go into exile, living in Mexico, Miami, New York, San Juan de Puerto Rico and Madrid.

The American press indicated that the relatives of who was considered the last survivor of the Golden Age of Cuban art, detailed that the funeral service will be held on the afternoon of September 27 at St Michael’s Church, in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami.
