Caine emphasizes that he will stop acting, but not completely disappear from the public stage. He wants to remain active as a writer for a while, after he has written his memoirs, among other things.
“I’ve written a number of successful books. So now I no longer see myself as an actor but as an author. That’s great because as an actor you have to get up at half past five in the morning and go to the studio, but as a writer you can just start without get out of bed.”
Sir Michael Caine has worked in recent years as a strong eighties on two major film productions: “Dunkirk” (2017) and “Tenet” (2020). British director Christopher Nolan, who directed both films, would still be allowed to call him for a small role, Caine said. He only wants to make an exception for him. Caine has starred in every Nolan film since 2005.
“Furthermore, I’ve been offered few roles in the past two years because no one is making movies I want to be in and I’m 88,” Caine said. “There’s not exactly an abundance of scripts with an 88-year-old lead character.” As far as Caine himself is concerned, his role in “Best Sellers” is thus his last.
In his long career, Michael Caine has been nominated for an Oscar 6 times. He is one of three actors to receive an Oscar nomination in five decades, alongside Jack Nicholson and Paul Newman. Caine won an Academy Award twice: in 1986 for Best Supporting Actor for Hannah and Her Sisters, the second in 1999 for The Cider House Rules. He has been an Officer of the Order of the British Empire since 2000.
