In Iceland, the use of Moderna’s drug for vaccination against coronavirus COVID-19 has been suspended. This step was taken due to the fact that earlier the use of the drug for adolescents was abandoned in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.
This is stated in the message press service Icelandic Health Authority. They noted that there is a sufficient amount of Pfizer / BioNTech’s drug in the country, so the chief epidemiologist recommended that the Moderna vaccine be abandoned.
“Since Iceland has enough Pfizer vaccine for both revaccination and primary vaccination of those who have not yet been vaccinated, the epidemiologist decided not to use the Moderna vaccine in Iceland,” it said.
As specified in the message, this decision is associated with an increased number of cases of myocarditis and pericarditis after vaccination with Moderna. As previously reported by the publication Reuters, according to the results of an unpublished study by the Swedish Health Agency. Scientists have found that the drug can cause rare side effects on the cardiovascular system. In particular, we are talking about myocarditis and pericarditis.
For this reason, Denmark, Sweden and Norway will not use Moderna’s vaccine for those born in 1991 or later.
As reported OBOZREVATEL, AstraZeneca vaccine passed the third phase clinical trials. It turned out that it protects 74% from the symptomatic course of the disease. At the same time, for the elderly, its effectiveness is even higher.
