Iceland: New powerful eruption of the Reykjavik volcano – Spooky images [Βίντεο] – 2024-08-23 07:14:56

A new eruption of the Sundnuksgjörður volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland has erupted, the sixth since December, authorities said.

“An eruption has begun (of the volcano) Sudnuksgjörður east of Mount Silingafel,” the Icelandic Meteorological Service said in a statement, adding that the development was recorded at 21:26 (local time; 00:26 Greek time), following a series of seismic tremors.

In live video, lava can be seen pouring out of a fissure and lighting up the sky.

The Icelandic Meteorological Service said it was not yet able to estimate how big the fault was.

This is the sixth consecutive volcanic eruption in Iceland since December. It was noted after another that lasted more than three weeks from the end of May in the same area, in the Reccianes peninsula.

Icelandic media reported that residents in the nearby fishing village of Grindavik were being evacuated, as in previous volcanic eruptions. They did not specify the number of people staying there.

The Reccianes peninsula had not experienced a volcanic eruption for eight centuries, until March 2021. Others occurred in August 2022, July and December 2023. Volcanologists warn that seismic activity has entered a new era.

Iceland has 33 active volcanic systems, more than any other European country.
