Icefighters Leipzig finally want to score

Leipzig. “It’s time we finally scored.” The announcement from Sven Gerike, coach of Exa Icefighters Leipzig, is clear. But that seems easier said than done. Because in the first two games of the league, the Leipzig ice hockey cracks scored two major defeats with 1: 5 (at home against Erfurt) and 2: 7 (in Herne). The ice fighters are bottom of the table, they haven’t existed in ages. The weekend opponents Herford and Krefeld seem made for the psychological development program. One club (Herford) is practically promoted, the other (Krefeld) was last last season. Not surprisingly, however, coach Gerike warns – of both opponents.

The first mission on Friday (8.30 p.m.) takes place at Herford EV. The Westphalia are among the league successors for the eliminated teams Duisburg, Essen and Braunlage, so they have promoted status. But what does a climber mean here? In the Herford team there are some well-known and above all very experienced professionals who have already played in the DEL and DEL2. Two numbers only. Players of the Herford EV bring the experience of 206 games in the DEL to the ice. The Icefighters: “We still figure out something,” says Gerike. The unusual time at which the game starts can be explained as follows: In Herford, public ice skating has priority, the ice hockey cracks have to stand behind when it comes to ice ages. Although there is currently no public ice skating, the schedule still remains.

The Sunday opponent Krefeld (6 p.m., Kohlrabi circus) started like Leipzig with two defeats. Gerike sees the team stronger than last year. So here too the watchword is caution. The situation is improving in terms of personnel. The striker Maximilian Spöttel (once Sonthofen and Halle), who has high hopes, can finally take part after his serious knee injury – he was still missing last weekend. With the Finn Walther Klaus (knee injury from the test in Hamburg) and Tim Heyter (shoulder) there are still two convalescents left.

By the way, at the premiere of the ice hockey broadcasts on the online portal Sprade.TV 500 spectators watched the Icefighters match against the Black Dragons Erfurt. “A decent value,” says Gerike. Maybe a few more see a possible win on Sunday.
