Ice sprinter Hendrik Dombek has to worry about the continuation of the pre-Olympic season. After his victory over 500 meters, the 27-year-old from Munich canceled his further starts at the German speed skating championships in Inzell due to injury. According to the German Speed Skating and Short Track Association (DESG), Dombek is suspected of having a torn muscle bundle in his thigh. There will be further medical examinations on Monday.
He sustained the injury at the start of the second 500-meter race on Friday evening. Previously, the World Cup 13. won the first race in the sprint all-around in 35.33 seconds and thus took the championship title. Dombek originally wanted to compete in the 1,000 meters and 1,500 meters.
Josie Hofmann successor to Claudia Pechstein
In Dombek’s absence, 500-meter runner-up Moritz Klein from Erfurt won the 1,000-meter title in 1:09.45 minutes. In the women’s race, local hero Anna Ostlender secured her second gold in 1:17.25 minutes, after winning the short sprint distance the day before. Fridtjof Petzold from Crimmitschau triumphed over 10,000 meters in a personal best time of 13:01.78 minutes, more than eight seconds ahead of 5,000-meter champion Patrick Beckert (Erfurt). “The times are all evolving compared to last year,” said DESG sports director Nadine Seiden Glanz.
This also applied to Josie Hofmann as the successor to the missing Claudia Pechstein over 5,000 meters. In her personal best time of 7:11.63 minutes, the Erfurt woman was a good six seconds faster than the 52-year-old Berliner who won her 43rd national title a year ago. Pechstein had canceled her starts at the German championships because of the burden of her million-dollar lawsuit before the Munich Higher Regional Court against the World Ice Skating Association.
