The detached bulkhead is roughly the size of New York (about 1,270 square kilometers), and broke off relatively close to the British research station Halley. That research station is currently abandoned, partly due to corona.
It is still unknown whether the ice under the station itself – which is now suddenly a lot closer to the water boundary – can also tear away from the rest of the continent in the long term, but that is probably not. In a sense, that ice is ‘detached’ from the torn-off piece: there is, among other things, another large tear line between the two areas.
The calving of the ice shelf is part of a natural process that can take many decades. The loosening is therefore not a demonstrable consequence of climate change.
