NEW YORK (EFE).— Skating on artificial ice from inside the Edge observatory, located on the 100th floor of a skyscraper in the new luxury neighborhood of Hudson Yards (Manhattan), more than 354 meters high, is the New York’s latest tourist activity open this week.
“We thought, ‘What’s more iconic in New York than ice skating?’ Installing ice in an enclosed area is quite a challenge. Luckily, we found this material called ‘glice’ (synthetic ice),” said Greg Holtzman, deputy director of Partnerships and Communications at Hudson Yards Experiences, in an interview.
The 95-square-meter skating rink was named Sky Skate (a play on words that means sky skate, but it sounds very similar to an ice rink) and from inside you can see the cities of New York from a bird’s eye view. York and New Jersey.
Thus, the ice rink is offered as a “plus” within the already numerous offer of observatories on top of city skyscrapers.
Holtzman indicated that the objective of the new observatory, which was inaugurated in 2020, was to offer an alternative activity to visitors, especially for days of heavy rain, when the terrace of The Edge has to be closed.
In addition, they wanted to install something that would also attract the attention of the residents and that could be successful on social networks.
“People come here because they want the perfect image of their New York experience, whether it’s a photo, video, TikTok or (Instagram) reel. So what better way to give visitors one more moment with Sky Skate. So they can have their moment outside and now they can also have their moment inside. And it gives them even more content to post,” Holtzman said.
The artificial ice rink will be open until March 14 and admission costs $48, which includes a pass to the observatory and skate rental; if purchased once inside the observatory, it will cost $10.
