The Eispiraten won their away game at Wölfen Freiburg 4-3. With a unified team performance, the team of coach Mario Richer kidnapped the three points from the Breisgau, even if the Crimmitschauer made it exciting again in the final section.
With four away defeats in a row and the knowledge that the ice pirates had not won in the Echte Helden Arena in Freiburg since February 2018, the staff, unchanged on Friday, made their way to the Breisgau this morning at 7:30 a.m. The longest bus trip of the season was not noticed by the Crimmit showers. Christian Billich was able to take the home side 1-0 up after just under five minutes, but then the ice pirates turned up. Inspired by the derby victory over Weißwasser, Mario Richer’s protégés made the game and were rewarded for it. Lukáš Vantuch came to a close just moments after the Freiburg lead and hammered the puck into the mesh to make it 1-1 (5th). The concentrated playing guests didn’t let a lot burn and even went in front shortly before the first break. After Daniel Weiß failed with his attempt at Ben Meisner, Mathieu Lemay pushed the disc over the line in the margin and made it 2-1 with his 15th goal of the season.
The ice pirates then picked up in the second run where they had left off in the first. Not even a minute was played when Timo Gams pulled and the puck slipped through Ben Meisner’s schooners – 3: 1 (21st). Defensively, the Crimmitschauer were very compact and offensively, they were always dangerous and efficient. So the 4: 1 seemed only a matter of time. When Scott Timmins Meisner took the look and Kelly Summers Blueliner trembled in the mesh of the Swabian case, the ice pirates were able to extend their lead even further – 4: 1 (26th). The Freiburgers were visibly knocked out, but at the end of the third they kept putting pinpricks. Michael Bitzer, in a good mood, saved the 3-goal lead during the break.
In the last 20 minutes, a colorful, open game developed. The ice pirates were anxious to be defensively good, but the wolves hit the accelerator again to get back into the game. After Bitzer and his front men acted strongly several times, a power play goal brought the Freiburg back into the game. Chad Bassen netted against the far post – 4: 2 (53rd). And the connection to 4: 3 should still fall, but too late to endanger the outcome of the match again. Two seconds before the final siren, Jordan George pushed the puck over the goal line (60th), thus also ensuring the final score. The strong West Saxons, who were currently showing a strong defensive performance, made their second 6-point weekend in this DEL2 season perfect.
