Apart from Ralph Krueger, who was born in Winnipeg and has Canadian and German and Swiss citizenship, there have been in the NHL since Alpo Suhonen (Chicago, 2000/01) and Ivan Hlinka (Pittsburgh, 2000–01 ) no more European head coach.

Rikard Grönborg is given the best chance of breaking the phalanx of North American hockey dominated by rope teams (Old Boys Network). The 51-year-old worked as a Swedish national coach with NHL greats, was twice world champion, lived for a long time overseas, is married to an American and also has a US passport.

Highly popular in a fan survey
Even before he signed in Zurich, he had talks with NHL clubs. That doesn’t lead to a job. But his name still circles in the NHL orbit. And now he has proven that he also works as a club coach. He led the ZSC Lions, who had missed the playoffs in the previous season, to the qualifying victory.

So the Swede was in the starting field of a survey by «Devils Insider». The New Jersey Devils fan site asked supporters who would be the next coach for Nico Hischier and Mirco Müller’s team. And Grönborg was very popular in the tableau with 64 candidates. Very high. The ZSC coach reached the final. Only there did he fail to Gerard Gallant (ex Las Vegas).

“It is flattering to know that fans recognize the work I have done so far,” the Lions trainer told BLICK. The fans should also trust him to do the job because the team is full of Europeans.

Contract without an exit clause
It is “not a big secret,” says Grönborg, that he “is aiming to coach in the NHL one day”, even though he is very happy in Zurich.
–
When Grönborg spoke to Davos last spring, he insisted on an NHL exit clause. He signed with the Lions without one until 2021. Would he still be willing to talk if an NHL club contacted him? “I have a contract with the ZSC and my intention is to fulfill my commitment here before doing anything else.”

The Zurich team had already lost a coach to the NHL in 2012 when Bob Hartley pushed his move to Calgary despite the current contract after the championship title.
