Czech hockey players won bronze medals at the World Championships in Finland. In Sunday’s match for 3rd place, they beat the USA 8: 4 in Tampere, although they lost 1: 3 after the first period. David Pastrňák shone with the hat-trick.
The Czechs won the precious metal at a major event after ten years, the Americans did not repeat the bronze success of last year’s championship in Riga.
Thanks to two precise interventions by Karson Kuhlman, the USA built up a two-goal lead in the introductory part, but the Czechs did not lay down their arms and managed to turn the score around. The key was the passage at the beginning of the third period, when at 2: 3 they scored three goals in less than three minutes. They also won the final part thanks to three interventions by Pastrňák 6: 1.
The Czechs won the medal for the first time since 2012, overall in the era of independence they won the thirteenth precious metal at the World Cup (6-1-6).

The Americans, who re-entered with only four purebred defenders, had no problems with motivation after losing in the semifinals. In the 4th minute, they threatened for the first time, Hartman solved the situation 2 to 1 with a shot that Vejmelka set off over the goal. The Czechs failed in the defense in the beginning, they played inconsistently in it, which resulted in three goals scored in the 1st period. In the 10th minute, Peeke fired from the blue line, the puck bounced towards Kuhlman, who cleaned him into the open net – 0: 1. Three minutes later, he used Gaudette’s power play when he finished the textbook combination with Tynan and Boldy with a shot between the circles. The opponent responded with Blümel’s defeat, which was destroyed by Swayman, and Bellows hit the upper shaft on the other side. The Czechs managed to reduce in the 16th minute, when after a pass Fleka the American goalkeeper Černoch aimed between the concretes, but the USA regained a two-goal lead by the end of the third. Thirteen seconds before the siren, Kuhlman scored in weakness, scoring his second goal of the match.
After the break, Vejmelka did not appear in the Czech goal, who was replaced by Langhamer. Coach Kari Jalonen’s charges tried to pressure the game, and the Americans managed to push them to the guardrails for a long time. Hertl did not move close at 32 minutes. It was not until the 33rd minute that Smejkal, who arrived at the goal, managed to reduce the puck after a shot by Sklenička. It gave the Czechs strength, in the 36th minute Blümel only narrowly missed the American goal from a promising position from the intermediate ring.
Jalonen slightly changed the composition of the attacks from the 3rd period, Pastrňák moved to the second formation, Blümel returned to the first. The changes helped, the Czechs added even more in the activity and they managed to turn the score around. First, Pastrňák equalized when he aimed exactly under Swayman’s hand from behind Peek, and then, after winning Krejčí’s bull, he hit from the first Červenka – 4: 3. The Americans reacted with a break in time, but even that did not slow down the opponent in the flight. In the 44th minute, Jordán found a completely free Shepherd at the back of the pass and the Boston cannon puck guided the puck from the first to move between the concrete of the moving Swayman. Pastrňák was tasty, he served Krejčí’s puck perfectly in the power play, but this time the US goalkeeper intervened. Kämpf managed to score the sixth goal in his own weakness, when he managed the Smejkal action to a successful end. The Americans tried a game in six, in which Kämpf again added the Czech Republic’s seventh goal to the empty net. Bordeleau then adjusted to 4: 7, but the final word was given by Pastrňák, who completed the hat-trick in the overtime and sealed the score to the final 8: 4.
