The cancellation of the junior World Hockey World Championships was preceded by a contumacy of Wednesday’s match of the B-group of the Slovak Republic – Russia in favor of Slovakia (1: 0).

The Russian representatives could not start the duel because forward Matvej Mičkov had a positive coronavirus test in front of him and the whole team had to go to quarantine. The Russians felt wrong, as the 16-year-old supertalent showed no signs of COVID-19 and another rapid test was negative.

“I spoke to Matvey. He feels great. The covid test he took from the doctors of the Russian national team had a negative result.” Mickov’s agent told Russian media Sergey Fedotov.

The Russian representatives passed a series of tests at the World Cup and all were negative. Only Mičkov’s test brought a positive result. This was followed by a third contumination in two days, which resulted in the premature termination of MS.

“I wanted the World Cup to be interrupted. People get sick, the sporting principle disappears. But how does Matva feel? First a positive coronavirus test came. We immediately did an express test and the result was negative.” quoted Sport Express Andreja Mičkova, the father of the Russian national team.

“We’ve done another test now, we’ll build on its results. We suspect it was a provocation. Only yesterday, the Americans were diagnosed with a coronavirus, not a rank-and-file player – the captain and a key player on the national team.” added Mičkov the Elder. Due to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, the IIHF Council finally canceled the Junior World Championships in Canada.
