Ice hockey thriller against Deggendorf: Indians win in the penalty shootout

What a game in front of almost 2900 spectators at Hühnerberg. The Indians won against the table leaders from Deggendorf 5:4 after a penalty shootout. With a lot of fight and passion right up to the end, Daniel Huhn’s team fought for the extra point in an intense game that had everything to offer with multiple video evidence checks and excitement right up to the end . Milan Pfalzer also played his 431st game for the ECDC, making him the club’s record player.

The Indians and the DSC gave each other nothing from the opening face-off. Both teams started without much testing. The DSC took a 1-0 lead with one of the first chances through ex-Indian Jaro Hafenrichter. The Memmingen team also applied pressure and came very close to equalizing, especially towards the end of the first period. Instead, the guests increased their lead to 2-0 through Antonin Dusek.

In the second third, the Indians came out of the locker room well and wanted to get back into the game as quickly as possible. Brett Schaefer and captain Tyler Spurgeon made the score 2-2. The Red and Whites then allowed Lower Bavaria to come back into the game. The DSC showed itself to be ripped off and, in the style of a top team, took the lead again with two goals before the break thanks to goals from Alex Großrubatscher and Curtis Leinweber. The crux of the matter came afterwards: Milan Pfalzer had to accept 5 minutes plus game time because of a knee check, but the Indians showed their best side and held themselves unscathed, which released new energy for the final period.

In the final third, after the penalty had finally expired, the Maustadt team put a lot of pressure on and pushed the Deggendorf team into their own zone. Tyler Spurgeon reduced the score to 3:4 around six minutes before the end. After five minutes of running, the home team rewarded themselves for their efforts; 15 seconds before the end, the Hühnerberg finally turned into a madhouse. It was fully deserved by Markus Lillich who put the puck in the net to make it 4:4 and send the game into overtime.

The Indians were clearly in control in overtime, but did not manage to score the extra point early. Despite several chances in the majority and the supposed winning goal by Spurgeon, which was denied after video evidence, it went to a penalty shootout. Here, too, it took some time until the winner could be determined. Linus Svedlund scored the decisive penalty to make it 5:4, ending a battle of nerves that lasted over three hours at Hühnerberg.

The ECDC has no games on Sunday, so the Indians won’t play again until November 15th, after the Germany Cup break. The next home game will take place on Sunday, November 17th, against the Tölzer Löwen. The game starts at 6:00 p.m., tickets for the next games will be available soon. Presale available.
