The Löwen Frankfurt have extended their negative streak in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). The Hessians lost their home game on Sunday to the Schwenninger Wild Wings 1:2 after extra time. It is the fourth defeat in a row.
The guests from the Black Forest got off to a dream start. Matthew Puempel took the lead after just 82 seconds, taking advantage of a defensive mistake by the hosts. During a counterattack, Lions keeper Jussi Olkinuora initially parried a shot from Kyle Platzer, who appeared free in front of him. Puempel, who had moved up, had little trouble in his second attempt.
Goalie Eriksson makes Löwen despair
The Schwenningen team, who were strong defensively, proved to be unpleasant opponents as they stubbornly defended their lead in the first and second thirds. They could also rely on their attentive goalkeeper Joacim Eriksson, who is one of the best goalkeepers in the league. The Swede unnerved the Frankfurters with his parades. There were 27 by the end of the second third alone, and even 32 by the end of the game.
The Lions, who suffered three defeats in the previous three games and had a goal difference of 3:12 goals, showed a lot of effort in the first two thirds, but were ultimately weak in assertion. They also revealed weaknesses in the power play: six power plays in the game, six times no goal.
Storm run rewarded shortly before the end
In the final third, the Lions pushed passionately for an equalizer. The Lions fans among the 5,500 spectators had to tremble for a long time. It wasn’t until 15 seconds before the end that Frankfurt managed to make it 1-1 thanks to Dominik Bokk. In extra time, Schwenningen quickly made short work of it. After less than a minute, Zach Senyshyn made the decision with a fine individual performance.
Frankfurt remains in ninth place in the table. In the next game, the Lions will host the twelfth-placed Straubing Tigers on Friday (7:30 p.m.).
DEL2: Kassel wins, Bad Nauheim loses
In the DEL2, the Kassel Huskies showed no weakness as league leaders and defeated the Lausitzer Füchse 5-2 on Sunday. Tristan Keck (2), Yannik Valenti, Tim Bender and Louis Brune scored for the superior North Hesse (62:31 shots on goal) against the North Saxons.
EC Bad Nauheim, on the other hand, lost against EC Freiburg 3:4 after extra time. Henri Kanninen, Taylor Vause and Parker Bowles scored for the Wetterauers in regular time. After nine seconds, the hosts conceded the decisive goal to make it 3:4 in overtime. The bottom team suffered their seventh defeat in a row.
