Before Salzburg’s Bundesliga team resumes training next week, the greatest talents of the ice hockey club have the chance to join Coach Matt McIlvane to play in the notebook. Since Monday, they have been training side by side in the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy with the best young players from the Munich sister club. The Salzburg head coach shares the management of the so-called U23 prospect camp with his Bavarian counterpart Don Jackson.

Captain Raffl helps and warns

“There are a lot of talented players around here. The youngest are only 16,” said McIlvane, impressed. The junior staff are supported by veterans like Thomas Raffl. “It’s fun to stand on the ice with the boys and see what’s growing there,” explains the Salzburg captain. At the same time, however, he warns of exuberant euphoria. “Of course, a training camp alone is not enough. It’s a rocky road to the top.”
