German NHL star Leon Draisaitl was the match winner in his Edmonton Oilers’ 3-2 overtime win against the Detroit Red Wings on his birthday.

Draisaitl secured the Oilers’ fourth win in the ninth game of the season on Sunday evening (October 27, 2024) with his 3-2 winning goal after 18 seconds of overtime and gave himself the best present for his 29th birthday.

Mattias Ekholm provided the assist for the decisive goal. “I have rarely received a better pass than this. That was a pass of superlatives,” said Draisaitl enthusiastically.

The Cologne native had previously equalized to 1:1 in the second third and prepared the 2:2 through Evan Bouchard in the final period. Draisaitl now has six goals and four assists to his name. Superstar Connor McDavid also contributed two assists for the title candidate, who had a bumpy start to the season.

Sixth defeat for Seider and Detroit

“It’s always easier to win when your best players show that they are the best,” said Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch happily. For Detroit with national player Moritz Seider it was the sixth defeat of the season in the tenth game.

Tim Stützle, who lost 4:5 to the Colorado Avalanche with the Ottawa Senators, also suffered a defeat. Stützle achieved his seventh assist of the season. It was the fourth loss in the eighth game for the Senators.
