If Nicholas Steiner hadn’t been so nonchalant with the target at the blue line after half of the game, Winterthur would not have scored the next goal through Oana. The 2: 3 brought the Eulachstädtern upwind, they tested giants in the sequence – once also outnumbered – several times.
In the final third, the Klotener took unnecessary penalties, which were almost punished. They even had to act twice short for 108 seconds, but Giant could not be beaten a third time. The native Oberlander continued to shine with great parades. The victory is primarily due to him.
Too many opportunities missed
Tomlinson’s team was convincing defensively, but it missed too many opportunities offensively. Especially when the opponent received a penalty five minutes before the end and Kloten failed to make the decisive 4-2 in the power play. Rihards Melnalsknis hit the crossbar and once the puck rolled just past the EHCW goal, Stettler would have been beaten.
Kloten has won all four test matches against league competitors. Tomlinson’s ex-club Rapperswil-Jona was defeated 5: 4 after a penalty shootout, only Ambri-Piotta had to bow 1: 3. At the end of the preparation for the season, the EHC will face the Bietigheim Steelers, a team from DEL 2, at home on Sunday. It is the first home game since the playoff final last season.
Squad with two attackers added
On Friday afternoon, Kloten had reported two transfers. Striker Mattia Hinterkircher (24) was signed by Thurgau until the end of the season and the Latvian Rihards Melnalsknis joins the team with a B license from the SCL Tigers. Coach Tomlinson had already indicated in an interview with the “Zürcher Unterländer” at the beginning of the week that he would like to have the 22-year-old attacker on his team. Both have contested the preparatory phase with the EHC. On Wednesday it was Dominic Forget leaves communicated to Olten. The Canadian has scored 88 points for the EHC in two seasons.
“The decision has matured from the knowledge of the preparation,” said sports director Patrik Bärtschi, commenting on the 40-year-old striker’s change to the league competitor. According to him, there are currently no signs of further transfers, but they cannot be ruled out either. “Of course we keep our eyes open when the cuts are made in the National League,” said Bärtschi.
