ICE arrests more than 50 illegal immigrants during operation in NYC – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – US Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced that it has arrested more than 50 immigrants in New York City during an operation in sanctuary cities across the country.

On Friday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of more than 170 immigrants during an operation between October 3 and 9 in different cities of the country where 54 of the detainees occurred in New York.

The body noted that deportations carried out last week focused on deportable aliens who were arrested for crimes and later released by state or local law enforcement agencies despite having active immigration detainments.

ICE detailed that more than 80% of the foreigners arrested had criminal convictions or criminal charges pending at the time of arrest.

Among those detained in the New York operations is a Panamanian immigrant who was detained by immigration agents on October 8 in the Bronx. According to ICE, the man would have received a conviction in May 2010 for sexual conduct against a child. On the other hand, a Peruvian immigrant from Astoria was also arrested after being indicted in 2016 for criminal sexual conduct in the third degree with a victim under the age of 17.

The arrests come after Mayor Bill de Blasio sent a letter to ICE directors after receiving reports that the agents would have been identifying themselves as NYPD agents during their operations in the city.

In just the beginning of the month, Brooklynites reported the presence of immigration agents in their neighborhoods, driving families away from a pantry-giving event at an area church:

Neighbors and activists in Brooklyn report ICE operations despite being in the middle of a pandemic, and accuse federal agents of playing a political role in the arrests. Luis Alejandro Medina reports.
