has been launched LexiMusan unprecedented research project about the language of musicinitiative of Complutense Institute of Musical Sciences (ICCMU) in collaboration with the University of La Rioja and the University of Salamanca what are you looking for bring together, organize and make available of humans and machines existing knowledge about music and language.
The project, in which they will participate forty-seven researchers of eight countries, will lay the intellectual and technical foundations for the development of a great digital music encyclopedia. The research will make it possible to fill the existing gap in the integration of knowledge about the words of music in the Spanish languagebringing those close to 600 million Spanish speakers knowledge until now only available in English, French, Italian and German.
How LexiMus works
Thanks to LexiMus, and unlike current dictionaries, the words will be used as historical sources, as if they were documents from Barbieri, correspondence from Manuel de Falla, Radio 3 podcast or video clips from C. Tangana. Whether opera or reggaeton, the definition of lexicon terms will take into account all existing knowledge: origin, use over time, history of the musical style to which it refers, main performers and musicians, diffusion, marketing or taste and acceptance by the public of the time.
It will also include the leak of musical concepts in colloquial speech, as being a ‘divo’ or ‘leitmotiv’. The project will limit giant sets of texts representative of the musical field (dictionaries, academic journals, newspapers and informative publications), called corpora for the study of the context and use of each term. For a corpus to be representative it must start from a minimum of 5 million words.
Goals
Currently there are similar initiatives in French (Renaissance Musical Lexicon), Italian (Italian Musical Lexicon), German (Handbook of Musical Terminology) o English (Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians). LexiMus aims to fill the gap that exists in the knowledge integration about the language of music in Spanish language.
The investigation will advance in two complementary processes: on the one hand, the construction of a Spanish Musical Lexicon through the definition and explanation of basic musical terms, as well as their particular use in Spanish; and on the other, a Domain Ontology for Music which will organize the musical terms and allow reconstruct the life and use of each wordusing computer procedures for massive data processing and artificial intelligence.
To do this, they will explore basic musical concepts (musical genre, rhythm, beat) that will serve to build what in the field of research is called a ‘conceptual reference model’, a kind of instruction manual for the global integration of knowledge about music and avoiding confusion for people and machines.
Team members include specialists in Musicology and Philology as Andrea Bombi, Jorge Bergua Cavero, Raul Orellana y Manuel Lagos Gismero; experts in musical terminology from the Middle Ages to the 21st century; in journalism and gender studies as Maria Palacios or en philosophy of music as Marina Hervas.
