ICAO estimates important recovery for Latin America

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) predicts that the Latin American and Caribbean region will have the best recovery worldwide in terms of capacity supplied by local airlines.

According to the four scenarios foreseen by ICAO in its latest report on the recovery of the industry from the covid-19 crisis, for June, the airlines of Latin America and the Caribbean could offer a number of seats between 24.6% and 33.6% less than they had in 2019, prior to the arrival of the pandemic.

In the four scenarios envisaged by ICAO, the Latin American region is the one with the best recovery during the first six months of 2021, followed by Africa and North America; in contrast, Europe and the Middle East will have the slowest recoveries this year.

The recovery of Latin America would come from the hand of the domestic market. According to ICAO, Latin American and Caribbean airlines could offer between 80.1 and 72.5% of the domestic seats they had available before covid-19.

On the other hand, the best recovery in terms of seats offered, in the international market, will be seen in Africa, followed by Latin America. In our region, recoveries will range between 66.5% (in the most optimistic scenario) and 55.2% of available seats in 2019.

However, the recovery of seats in Latin America does not mean that the number of passengers will also rebound to the same levels. ICAO noted that, in the first six months of 2021, Between 66 and 77 million total passengers could be lost in the region.

The international airline industry in Latin America and the Caribbean would lose up to 40 million passengers, while the domestic until 36 million, the Civil Aviation Organization pointed out.

Likewise, ICAO estimates a decrease of up to eleven thousand 379 million dollars in income during the first six months of the year.

Europe, the most affected

The covid-19 pandemic, as well as government restrictions and new waves of infection worldwide will wreak their greatest damage on the European airline industry.

According to ICAO, in 2021, the airlines of the old continent would offer a seat capacity between 56% and 65.4% less than they had during the first half of 2019 and would lose up to 74.3% of the total passengers they had two years ago years and up to $ 51.374 billion in revenue.
