IC doctors want booster shot for overweight men (40+)

The heads of departments make this call news hour. “The demand for IC capacity will become (too) great in the coming weeks,” the intensivists warn in a statement.

“We fear that we can no longer fulfill our responsibility and that we can no longer provide everyone with the correct IC care, as we were used to,” the statement said.

Corona figures: another increase today

The number of corona patients in hospitals increased again today. There are currently 1122 corona patients in hospital, yesterday there were 1042 corona patients. This is evident from the most recent figures from the National Coordination Center for Patients Spreading (LCPS).

There are currently 220 corona patients in intensive care units and a total of 902 patients are now in the nursing wards.

In the past week, RIVM registered 49,614 positive tests, which is an average of 7088 infections per day. Today, RIVM reported 8219 new infections.

Peter van der Voort, intensivist at UMC Groningen tells RTL Nieuws that we will face major problems if we do not intervene quickly. “We have expressed our concerns, but it is a responsibility for all of us.”

Van der Voort explains that the intensivists are proposing stricter measures to reduce the number of infections and hospital admissions. First of all, by increasing the vaccination rate and tightening the mouth cap obligation.

Booster shot for people over forty

They also argue for expanding the corona admission ticket, for example by using it at churches. In addition, they therefore recommend a booster shot for people over forty. “Starting with overweight men. They are the first to enter the intensive care unit.”

The intensivists see that the immunity decreases. “More vaccinated people are coming to the IC. That’s why a booster is important.”

Self-discipline

In the statement, the heads of departments call on everyone to do what is possible to greatly reduce the number of infections. “Self-discipline is now necessary, otherwise we will get into major problems with healthcare. Let’s all be sensible Dutch people and understand that it has to be a few weeks now.”

“As heads of the university intensive care units for adults, we have worked together with all healthcare professionals for more than a year and a half to provide the right IC care to everyone who needed it,” the department heads write in the statement. “We are now looking for the media because the water is up for grabs.”
