Ibrahimovic: “I played without a cruciate ligament”

On Sunday, Zlatan Ibrahimovic jumped into the second half against Sassuolo, when Milan secured the title in Italian Serie A. It was the Swede’s 14th league title in his career, and also the one that caused the most pain, if you can believe him.

“In the last six months I have played without anterior cruciate ligament in my left knee. The knee has been swollen for six months. I have only been able to train with the team ten times in the last six months,” writes Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Instagram.

On Wednesday, Milan announced that Ibrahimovic had undergone knee surgery to treat injuries to both the anterior cruciate ligament and the meniscus. Now seven to eight months of rehabilitation await and only then will it become clear whether Ibrahimovic, who turns 41 in October, can continue his career.

The road to the operation has been tough, admits the striker, who returned to Milan 2020 – with the hope of leading the team to its first league title since 2011. On Sunday, he achieved his goal.

“Painkillers every day for six months. I have barely slept for the last six months because of the pain. I have never suffered so much on and off the pitch. I managed to do something that was impossible. I only had one goal in mind, that “make my teammates and my coach champions, because I had given them a promise. Today I have a new cruciate ligament and a new trophy”, writes Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
