Former Ajax player and former Nigeria international Tijjani Babangida (50) was reportedly seriously injured in a car accident. Media in the African country report this. His brother and former FC Volendam player Ibrahim (47) would not have survived the accident.
Ibrahim Babangida played for FC Volendam between 1997 and 2002. He won the World Cup with Nigeria under 17 in 1993. Ibrahim was 47 years old.
The accident happened on the highway from Kaduna to Zaria. Tijjani Babangida’s wife and a maid were also in the car with the former international and were taken to a hospital.
According to Nigerian media, Tijjani Babangida is in critical but stable condition. His wife was also in the car and was admitted to Zaria hospital with injuries.
Tijjani Babangida started his career in the Netherlands at Roda JC in 1991. He also played on loan for VVV-Venlo, after which he switched to Ajax in 1996. The winger, who also had a rental period at Vitesse, was under contract there until 2003. The now 50-year-old won gold with Nigeria at the 1996 Olympics and went to the 1998 World Cup with the Super Eagles.
