[Financial Channel/Comprehensive Report]Due to IBM’s withdrawal, Russian Railways has warned that lack of support could lead to suspension of ticket sales and disruption of international transportation. Currently, Russia is expected to spend 6.4 billion rubles (about NT$3 .14 billion) to replace the system.

Russian media have reported that Russian Railways runs on the z/Architecture platform, which is compatible only with IBM equipment, and IBM stopped supporting Russian customers in June this year. To replace technology from IBM, SAP and Oracle, Russian Railways will spend 6.4 billion rubles to change the system.

The report noted that Russian Railways plans to develop nine foreign software import substitution projects, involving locomotive accounting systems, passenger flow modeling solutions and infrastructure management.

Among them, the most expensive project is the development of a new version of the Express ACS ticketing system, which will cost Russian Railways 1.84 billion rubles and will allow the system to run on the x86-64 processor architecture. The current system runs on the IBM z/Architecture platform, which is connected to the US company’s high-performance servers.

A Russian electronics maker has complained that in terms of server power and fault tolerance, Russian manufacturers don’t produce similar products, so moving the ticketing system to another platform “would be painful.”
