IBM Canada and Quebec’s Platform for Digital and Quantum Innovation (PINQ²) have unveiled the IBM Quantum System One in Bromont, Quebec. The move is seen as a significant step forward for Quebec in the field of quantum sciences. Quebec’s Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy Pierre Fitzgibbon said the arrival of IBM’s quantum computer demonstrates Quebec’s talent and potential to become a world leader in this field.
Under the five-year agreement, IBM Canada will own, operate and maintain the system, while PINQ² will be the sole administrator. PINQ² is a non-profit organization created in 2020 by the Quebec Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Energy and the University of Sherbrooke.
IBM’s senior innovation manager, Jean-Francois Barsoom, explained that IBM will handle the infrastructure and keep it running properly for the duration of the contract. However, the system will only be used by PINQ², allowing them to make decisions on pricing, contracting and commercial use. IBM will provide assistance in these areas as well.
The partnership between IBM and PINQ² includes the creation of a quantum working group tasked with developing sustainable solutions using quantum technology. The group will receive support from founders Hydro Quebec and Sherbrooke University.
PINQ² will also use a high-performance computing center in the Humano district of Sherbrooke, allowing companies to access hybrid quantum computing services. This approach aims to assess the potential of digital and quantum technologies in sectors such as healthcare, energy, manufacturing, environment and sustainable development.
In addition, the focus is on the collaboration between AI and quantum technologies. The goal is to find ways to use both AI and quantum technologies in parallel to solve problems more efficiently. For example, quantum algorithms can help train AI, while AI can help determine the most suitable algorithms to test quantum computers.
Éric Capelle, CEO of PINQ², believes that this development places Quebec in the quantum field with potential benefits such as attracting companies, creating jobs and solving complex problems in cyber security, wildfire prevention, flood management and molecular simulations. new drugs.
