The local government of the Balearic Islands approved a law on Friday to deal with excess alcohol consumption on the Spanish islands of Ibiza and Mallorca, reports the island group’s regional president on Twitter.
The new law prohibits happy hours and open bars. Shops are also no longer allowed to sell alcohol between 9:30 PM and 8 AM and new licenses for boats that are specifically intended for parties are suspended.
The local government is considering fines that can go up to 600,000 euros for breaking the new law. Catering companies that are in violation could also be closed for a maximum of three years.
The legislation does not apply everywhere on the islands. The new rules apply in three entertainment zones from next week.
Balconing, whereby people jump from one balcony to the other at hotels or jump into a swimming pool from a balcony, is also prohibited. The phenomenon must be punished harder by the government and hotels.
Ibiza and Mallorca are popular holiday destinations among Europeans. Every year the Balearic Islands attract around 13 million tourists. The Spanish islands are also frequently visited locations among Dutch people.
