IBERDROLA LEAGUE | Beatriz Álvarez will be the first president of the women’s soccer league

Current General Director of Sports of the Government of Asturias and former president of Oviedo Moderno, she has the support of 12 of the 16 clubs to lead the new competition

Beatriz Alvarez Mesa In the coming weeks, she will become the first president of the professional women’s soccer league in Spain. The current General Director of Sports of the Government of Asturias has the support of 12 of the 16 clubs involved in the electoral process, sources familiar with the candidacy have confirmed to EL PERIÓDICO DE ESPAÑA.

Álvarez was a soccer player and coach, as well as president of the Modern Oviedo (currently integrated into Real Oviedo) between 2009 and 2018, thus accrediting extensive experience in women’s football. His role in politics is added to his work in football, after entering the Asturian Government in the last legislature, under the presidency of the socialist Adrián Barbón.

Álvarez is also part of the board of directors of the Higher Sports Council and was, therefore, one of the people who approved the statutes that will govern the competition that he will lead in the coming weeks.

As the newspaper ‘Marca’ has advanced, Álvarez is the candidate chosen by the 12 clubs that have been working hand in hand for months on the configuration of the new league and that belong to the Association of Women’s Soccer Clubs. They are all from Primera Iberdrola except for Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic and Madrid CFF.

two more candidates

His candidacy is added to the two previously announced. Ainhoa Tirapu, with Dolores Martelli as vice president, was the first to jump into the fray. Days later she did Maria Teixidor, who has Reyes Bellver as number two.

The main question now is whether there will be electionssince each pre-candidate must be endorsed by four clubs to access the electoral race and each club can only grant one guarantee. Given that Álvarez will achieve, except for surprise, 12 of them, she would only have room at most for another candidate, that she would have to obtain the support of the four clubs that do not support Álvarez.

This will fulfill the wish expressed by the government, publicly and repeatedly, that the new professional league is chaired by a woman. In fact, no candidacy headed by a man and that is not expected to happen.
