IATI Theater blooms with the premiere of ‘Bloom’ in Manhattan

The premise of the play Bloom o Florecer, in Spanish, describes the confrontation between a mother and her son, set in the not-distant future, although in no specific country.

Nevertheless, Bloom it has the peculiarity of being imbued with a strong Latin spirit. Well, its creator, the playwright of Dominican origin Marco Antonio Rodríguez, conceived this work in English.

Playwright Marco Antonio Rodríguez premieres Bloom at IATI Theater.

“It’s the world we live in, it’s our country: the United States. And it’s a nation that has been spawned by immigrants. We immigrants have made this country. So it’s important to me to represent our Latino communities, either in English or in Spanish”, details the playwright Marco Antonio Rodríguez.

One of the peculiarities of Bloom is that not only is its author Latino, but so are its cast members and director. What makes the montage feel familiarly Hispanic.

Victoria Pérez directs the production of Bloom at IATI Theater.

“It’s a really cool thing, right? Because I’m used to directing in English. So, when I can change, I use the espanglish with the actors, since many times – directing in English – one wonders: how do you say this in English or Spanish? But here, with these actors, I was always able to go from English to Spanish to espanglish and everything was understood”, explains the production director, Victoria Pérez.

Monica Steuer is Julia in Bloom.

In Bloom The maternal relationship is reviewed from the perspective that one of her characters only has one hour to live, so her leading actress, Mónica Steuer, referred to her role in the play: “My character is called Julia. She is Roan’s mother and she is a woman who has had a difficult life, she is a warrior, she loves her son very much but, at the same time, she has a hard time understanding certain things about his behavior and the choices he has made in his life “.

Rafael Beato is Roan in Bloom.

For his part, the actor who plays Roan is Rafael Beato, a young man born in the Dominican Republic who recounted the parallels between his character and his real life: “The play required me to be much more aggressive with her, much more sarcastic And for me that, at times, I came to feel that way with my mother because I belong to the LGBT community. But that was a long time ago and I feel like I’ve gotten over that. And the work asked me to revisit that and for me that was one of the biggest challenges of the work”.

Bloom It is presented at the IATI Theater until May 8. And to get tickets you must visit the website: iatitheater.org
