International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Secretary General Rafael Grossi will visit Japan next week to review the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi announced on the 30th that Grossi would visit Japan from July 4 to 7.
Kyodo News reported that on the first day of the visit, President Grossy will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and deliver the results of the safety evaluation related to the discharge of contaminated treated water.
After reviewing this evaluation, it is known that the Japanese government will finalize the release date of the polluted water, which was supposed to be carried out around this summer.
In the midst of this, an IAEA official said that during Grossi’s visit to Japan, he plans to open an IAEA office at the Fukushima nuclear power plant site.

According to Japanese media such as the Yomiuri Shimbun on the 29th, after visiting Japan, President Grossi will visit Korea, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands, a Pacific island country, to share the IAEA report on Fukushima contaminated water and explain safety.
At the Fukushima nuclear power plant, an accident occurred when the power supply was cut off due to the impact of the tsunami during the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, causing the reactor to explode.
After the accident, the water injected to cool the reactor and the underground water and rainwater that flowed into the reactor building contacted the melted nuclear fuel or were contaminated with radioactivity when mixed with stagnant water in the building.
Japan has carried out decontamination while storing contaminated water in about 1,000 storage tanks.
Japanese government officials said they plan to dilute it to a level that is safer than international standards and release it over several decades.
