International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Secretary-General Rafael Grossi, who visited Korea regarding the issue of the discharge of contaminated water from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant, said that the final report released by the IAEA was not biased towards Japan.
Secretary-General Grossi said this in an interview with Korea’s ‘Yonhap News’ news agency on the 8th.
Earlier, on the 4th, the IAEA announced a final report stating that the Japanese government’s plan to discharge contaminated water meets international safety standards, saying that the impact of Japan’s discharge of contaminated water on the human body and the environment would be minimal.
“The report is not at all biased toward Japan, and nothing the IAEA did was done for Japan,” Grossi said in an interview.
“It was 2021 when Japan first revealed its release plan and asked the IAEA to evaluate the plan, and it took two years for the report to come out, which is a very long time,” said Grossi.
Regarding the question of whether Japan’s discharge of contaminated water into the ocean is the best way, Grossi said in an interview, “This is a political decision and I cannot judge a political decision.” “If there is a violation of nuclear safety measures, then I just have the right to say it’s not right,” he explained.
Meanwhile, regarding the protest held at Gimpo Airport against Secretary-General Grossi’s visit to Korea, Secretary-General Grossi said, “It is part of the democratic process,” and “I came here probably to dispel the concerns of many people.”
