IAEA Monitoring Water Levels in Reservoir Supplying Shut Down Reactors at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) wants to monitor the water levels in the reservoir that supplies the shut down reactors of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, in southern Ukraine, with cooling water. This is reported by IAEA director Rafael Grossi. The recent destruction of the Kachovka dam has caused the water level in that reservoir to drop sharply.

According to IAEA, there are wide variations in reported data on reservoir water levels. That is why the agency wants to provide clarity on the spot.

If the water level drops too much, cooling water can no longer be pumped into the shut down reactors and the nuclear waste. The power station can then still rely on cooling basins, which contain enough water for several months.

However, because of the war in Ukraine, experts have little faith in this intermediate solution and are concerned about security.

Grossi, who is traveling to Kyiv and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant next week, stressed that the IAEA needs access to the power plant’s electrical installations. He also wants to send additional observers to the nuclear power plant, which is under Russian control.
