OLV has launched Voodoo Monkey vodka and liqueurs in tubes resembling fruit mousses for children. The market is boiling. The manufacturer defends its products.

  • Voodoo Monkey is a brand belonging to OLV sp. akcyjna based in Morszków – a village located in the Masovian Voivodeship, in the Sokołów County, in the Jabłonna Lacka commune.
  • The company promotes vodka and liqueurs in tubes, which are controversial not only because of the way they are served, but also because of the design of packaging resembling children’s products.
  • Speaker of the Sejm and MP Szymon Hołownia announces intervention in this matter, arguing that the company clearly wants to reach children, not adult consumers.

Alcohol in sachets manufacturer

The Voodoo Monkey brand is a new player on the market, which has so far conquered primarily the Internet (fortunately not yet sales, which we know thanks to the Market Monitoring Center, but we will write about it later), creating juicy descriptions of its products, i.e. a new version of the already famous in Poland “monkeys” so far offered in glass bottles. Now, “thanks” to an ingenious manufacturer, vodka and liqueurs in small portions will be available in colorful tubes that look confusingly like children’s mousses.

As we read on the website of the manufacturer – OLV, “Voodoo Monkey is not just a brand, it is a real rebel in the world of alcohol.”

PiS MP Jan Warzecha has already pointed out to the Minister of Health that alcohol is served in the same way as fizz for children.

This disturbing trend [alkohol sprzedawany w saszetkach – red.] poses a serious risk, increasing the risk of accidental alcohol consumption by minors, which is completely unacceptable. The growing availability of such products in online stores raises justified concerns about the health and safety of young people in Poland. Due to the above, it is necessary to implement more restrictive control mechanisms, such as mandatory identity verification by the courier upon receipt of the parcel and to refine the regulations on the marking and sale of alcoholic products, especially in the virtual space – emphasized MP Jan Warzecha.

Alcohol sachets. Szymon Hołownia: “The goal is the child”

September 30 this year The Speaker of the Sejm and MP Szymon Hołownia spoke about these products.

(…) And what do I see? One of the producers of these healthy mousses decided to pack… vodka in the same packaging. Tincture. And liqueur. (…) The goal is clear. Will an adult buy a “monkey” in a package like a children’s musical? Mercy. The target here is the child. Curious and encouraged by the fact that the poison is packaged like a medicine, they are supposed to cross the symbolic border, buy a “musik” for school (maybe the seller won’t notice it among other similar packages, maybe a friend with ID will buy it) and, completely unsymbolically, start drinking. This is “playing with conventions” and “courage to experiment”. On the lives of our children.

I write this primarily as a father. Dear sachet water company, what you are doing is pure EVIL. If you want to make our children drunk, maybe start selling them weapons as part of “taking children’s competition to a new level of reality”, or whatever other bullshit your marketing will come up with. I sincerely hope that karma will come back to you and your greed will show itself. That responsible producers of children’s snacks will protest. And that the consumer boycott will show you that you shouldn’t mess with your parents. And I will not give up on this matter as an MP either. Shame. Shame. SHAME”.


Alcohol sachets. The manufacturer defends the products

In response to questions from Business Insider Polska, the manufacturer of Voodoo Monkey sachets, OLV, argues that its product is aimed at adults, and its form results from the fact that the sachet is a “practical packaging that perfectly replaces traditional glass”.

The packages have clear and large markings, including those covering one entire side of the package, and on the front there is clear information about the percentage of alcohol in the product. They differ in colors and designs, have excise stamps, are sold from specially and clearly marked stands, and meet all other requirements of the Act – said the manufacturer, quoted by Business Insider. He adds that test sales of the product are underway, but he does not want to comment on the goals.

Owolovo, i.e. the president and the foundation

What makes the matter even more interesting is the fact that, according to official records, the president of OLV – the producer of Voodoo Monkey – is Krzysztof Maria Wasilewski, whose name also appears next to the name of the recently established “OWOLOVO for children” foundation.

This foundation has not announced any activities yet, but on its website we read “Get ready! We are working on something really cool.”

Journalist, activist, author of books and performances Maja Staśko ironizes this fact on the website X, “Will the Foundation provide help for children whose parents consume excessive amounts of alcohol due to messages like the one released by their company, in which alcohol is to accompany every day?”

Monkey vodka in sachets – what is it?

It seems that the new Voodoo Monkey brand on the market is associated with the American company Monkey In Paradise based in Florida, which produces vodka under the same name “from the highest quality American corn”. – Monkey In Paradise Vodka is seven times distilled and seven times carbon filtered to produce the purest, smoothest and most drinkable vodka you can get. This is six times more than in the case of other vodkas – we read on the manufacturer’s website.

Vodka in tubes – sales are starting

The Food Portal asked the Market Monitoring Center whether and how the sales of vodka in tubes/sachets are shaping up in local stores, i.e. those where Poles buy the most monkeys. – Sales of vodka in sachets are on the decline and we don’t see this growth in the data yet – we heard in CMR.

We also asked Eurocash wholesalers about these products.

Nicotine in sachets has been on the market for several years. Within the Eurocash Group, it is sold by Eurocash Serwis. Wholesalers have separate zones where these nicotine products are sold. As for vodka in sachets, at the moment this product is not included in the wholesale and distribution offer of the Eurocash Group.
