Mexico City. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo affirmed this Thursday that she will continue to insist that Spain offer a public apology to the indigenous peoples of Mexico for the atrocities committed during the Conquest and the colonial period, while ensuring that those who criticize her “do not distance themselves” and “does not paint a line” from former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador should not be surprised because “we are part of the same movement.”
In her press conference at the National Palace, the president returned to statements made by the spokesman for the parliamentary group of the ultra-conservative party Vox in the Cortes of Aragon, Alejandro Nolasco, who assured that the new president of Mexico has behaved “like an absolute illiterate and like a “absolutely ignorant” and that the Spaniards “will never ask for forgiveness” and “much less for doing things well” in front of “tribes” such as Incas, Aztecs or Mayans who “came from a horrifying culture.”
Sheinbaum Pardo said that among some Spaniards and Mexicans there is “this vision that they do not have to ask for forgiveness,” because they affirm that the colonizers came to “save” the inhabitants of America and that what was experienced was “the meeting of two worlds.” ”.
“No, no, it is not like that,” declared the head of the Executive, who explained that the colonizers committed massacres, such as that of the Templo Mayor or that of Cholula.
The president added that in Mexico there are also those who support the vision expressed by the Vox spokesperson and that there are also those who were upset because yesterday the Mexican State offered a public apology for the 1968 massacre.
“What’s more, they praised Díaz Ordaz, it’s the last straw,” he said.
“Yesterday was very important, of course the judicial investigations and everything that the victims want to present must continue, but the State has to apologize for atrocities that the State committed, and that exalts the people, the nations,” said Sheinbam Pardo.
“And there are those who also say, very worried, very worried: Claudia Sheinbaum is not distancing herself from López Obrador, she is not drawing her line. Well, if we are the same movement, if what we said is that we wanted the Fourth Transformation to continue and that is what the people of Mexico decided.”
“Why are you surprised,” he concluded.
