Tonia Haddix describes himself as a “chimpanzee Dolly Parton“. The former nurse now takes care of wild animals growing up in captivity.

American Haddix describes his deep affection for monkeys in Max’s recent documentary series Chimp Crazy.

– It’s like love for God. I’ll do anything to protect it, Haddix talks about Tonka the chimpanzee in the clip seen in the trailer for the series.

Tonka is a 32-year-old retired Hollywood chimpanzee. Haddix takes care of a total of seven chimpanzees, but she has a special affection for Tonka. Haddix says she loves Tonka even more than her own children.

Despite, or perhaps because of, his deep devotion, Haddix has had repeated run-ins with law enforcement in recent years. The animal protection organization Peta has accused Haddix of mistreatment of animals. The matter has been reported by, among others, the New York Post.

In 2020, Haddix allowed four monkeys to move into the sanctuary, but kept three monkeys, including Tonka, with her.

According to Peta, the mistreatment continued even after this, and in 2021 the rest of the animals were removed from Haddix’s care.

However, the authorities were only able to take two chimpanzees with them. Haddix claimed that Tonka had died of a heart defect. Haddix’s husband said he cremated the monkey’s body.

However, it was later revealed that Tonka is alive and living in Haddix’s basement. Haddix, who lied in front of the court, was ordered to pay Peta’s legal fees for more than 225 thousand dollars.
