This May 7, the incumbent president, Vladimir Putin, will be inaugurated for his fifth term, after having won the March presidential elections with 87.28% of the votes. This is a record result in the history of modern Russia. Sputnik shows you how the investiture ceremony of the new head of state is celebrated.
According to the law on Russian presidential elections, the investiture of the head of state is celebrated after six years from the date of assumption of office by the predecessor. If a repeat election or early election occurs before that date, the president is sworn in 30 days after the Russian Central Electoral Commission publishes the official results of the presidential elections.
Since 2000, the inauguration of the president of Russia takes place on May 7.
The Constitution of Russia indicates that, in the ceremony, the president takes the oath before representatives of the Federation Council (Senate), the State Duma (Lower House) and the Russian Constitutional Court.
The script for the ceremony was prepared for the first Russian president, Boris Yeltsin, and since then it has not undergone radical changes. The only modification that was made is related to the location of the ceremony. When Yeltsin came to power, the ceremony was held in the State Kremlin Palace. Since 2000, the event has taken place in the ceremonial halls of the Grand Kremlin Palace.
