I went to watch the regatta and they showed me a car. The Cupra Terramar wants to be like the Formentor

The Cupra Terramar is a hot new addition to the sports brand’s lineup, which is increasingly hungry for global markets. The temperamental new SUV is noticeably larger than the record-breaking Formentor and the Ateca that is losing ground to it. The new Cupra scored its first success on the day of its debut – it managed to briefly attract the attention of fans watching the America’s Cup in Barcelona. We even know the Polish prices, so we already know everything about it.

The Cupra Terramar is a bit like the Formentor in XL size

First impression? The new Cupra SUV has no shortage of Spanish temperament. From the front, the car looks similar to the refreshed versions of the Leon and Formentor. The family resemblance is ensured not only by the matrix headlights with a triangle motif, but also by the protruding “nose” and the lower grille. Interesting fact: laser lamps can “draw” welcome patterns or warning signs on walls and roads..

There are more elements that are stylistically consistent with the aforementioned models. Similar lines can be seen, for example, in the 18-, 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels or the rear lights connected by a light strip, into which the badge is incorporated. 19-inch rims are standard in the top engine versions VZ (short for the Spanish word Veloz, meaning fast), while 20-inch rims are only available as an option.

There is one difference from other new models: The Cupra Terramar has a massive silhouette and in no way pretends to be a coupe. The car is 4,519 mm long, 1,863 mm wide and 1,584 mm high. Add to that a wheelbase of 2,681 mm and we get the largest SUV in the brand’s range.

The Cupra Terramar’s colours and interior were “borrowed” from concept cars

During the launch, Cupra revealed that the compact SUV will be offered in nine body colours: Dark Void inspired by the DarkRebel concept car, Fjord Blue, Cosmos Blue, Timanfaya Grey, Graphene Grey, Midnight Black, Glacial White and two matte colours, namely Century Bronze (this will be a hit) and Enceladus Grey.

Colors are colors, but the whole interior makes a really great impression. You can see the inspiration from Cupra concept cars, such as the Dark Rebel. However, the designers did not go all out here, as in the electric Tavascan. and there are a few less biomorphic shapes. The Cupra Terramar’s dashboard has more elegance. Cupra is a sports brand, so naturally the Terramar has semi-bucket seats and a steering wheel with paddles. The driving position is slightly higher than in the Leon or Formentor, but you can still feel the spirit of a street hooligan.

The cabin can be finished in three colors: phenomenal blue (Deep Ocean Blue), burgundy (High Canyon) and gray (Moon Light). Traditionally, the command center for new cars from this group is a large infotainment screen (12.9 inches with a touch-sensitive slider underneath) supported by a digital cockpit behind the steering wheel and a head-up display on the windshield. Sennheiser Mobility took care of pleasant music reception on the road, developing an optional 12-speaker audio system with 390 W for the Cupra Terramar.

The Cupra Terramar can be either fully internal combustion or hybrid

The range of engines of the new Spanish SUV consists of a petrol engine in two power versions, a mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid in two power versions. The latter, according to the manufacturer, is able to travel up to 100 km in zero-emission mode.. Below is the full list of units:

  • 1.5 eTSI (mHEV) with 150 HP with 7-speed DSG gearbox;

  • 2.0 TSI with 204 HP with 7-speed DSG gearbox;

  • 2.0 TSI VZ with 265 HP with 7-speed DSG gearbox;

  • 1.5 eHybrid with 204 HP with 6-speed automatic gearbox;

  • 1.5 eHybrid VZ with 272 HP with 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Cupra engineers know that powerful engines are not enough

The Cupra Terramar has a standard sports suspension (lowered by 10 mm compared to the default MQB Evo platform configuration) with MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link system at the rear. Engineers have added a progressive steering system that adjusts the power steering to the speed of the road.

A technological revolution is electric brake support, which allows for more precise dosing of braking force. On request, the VZ version can be equipped with high-performance, six-piston Akebono brakes with discs measuring 375 x 36 mm.. In addition to the 4Drive drive (in some versions), the DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) system with two-valve shock absorbers is also responsible for the vehicle’s stability. Interestingly, in the VZ versions it is said that ESP can be completely disconnected, which is unheard of today.

To celebrate the collaboration with the America’s Cup, the Cupra Terramar will also be available in a limited America’s Cup edition at the start of sales. Only a little over 1,300 units will be available with the equipment reserved for this version (20-inch black alloy wheels, black Moonslate leather and America’s Cup logos).

The Cupra Terramar immediately hit the configurator after its premiere and can now be ordered. The first units of the new Spanish SUV will reach customers in November of this year. Three engine versions are available at launch: 1.5 eTSI 150 HP for PLN 173.8 thousand, 2.0 TSI 265 HP (VZ) for PLN 229.9 thousand and 272 HP plug-in hybrid (VZ) costing PLN 240.6 thousand.
