“I was there as a child”: Velbert Theater on the road to success

Neviges. The Kolping Family Neviges amateur performance group is gaining popularity and is rejuvenating. Your new piece is fast-paced, and there are a few accidents.

When the bell hall in Velbert-Neviges, which is completely barrier-free, suddenly has an elevator, people in a good mood throw themselves into the South Seas and crazy vacationers make life difficult for the staff in the luxury hotel, then it’s theater time in Neviges: “There is also Mountains in Hawaii! Or how are things going here in Honolulu,” is the name of the new piece that the Hardenberg-Neviges Kolping Family amateur theater group is currently rehearsing with enthusiasm. The premiere is on Saturday, November 9th, 5 p.m. in the Glocken-Saal, Tönisheider Straße 8. The mood in the ensemble is cheerful and relaxed for many reasons, and one is particularly relaxed.

“I can write my lines really well,” says Wilhelm Funken, laughing happily. No wonder, as “Mr. Shoemaker” he doesn’t have to remember a single sentence. But his whimpering to himself is all the more pitiful when the resolute nurse Mandy (Brigitte Wedler) pushes him around in a wheelchair, carelessly and visibly annoyed. If she isn’t making another guest’s eyes look good, even Grandpa Theo (Günter Erner) isn’t safe from her clear advances. Grandpa Theo, for his part, digs up what isn’t up to three. His daughter-in-law can try as hard as she can to save the situation, saying that he doesn’t mean it that way. “No, no, I mean it exactly like that. “But I don’t know if I could still do it,” insists Grandpa Theo. It’s a colorful group that meets in a hotel in Hawaii: The ensemble of the Kolping amateur theater group has a lot of fun during rehearsals, which is not only due to the cheerful, fast-paced comedy that director Andrea Pannen has chosen.

Stage fright is common for everyone in Velbert

While many clubs and institutions complain about problems with recruiting young people and the aging population, theater fans are not only happy about the influx: In terms of average age, the ensemble has also become significantly younger since last year. They all have one thing in common: Alessio Fricano, the youngest in the group at 21, and the oldest Günter Erner (76), who is bursting with energy: “I really enjoy doing theater. I’ve done the technique here before, but it doesn’t let you go. “You just want to play,” says Detlev Schad, who has been a member of the ensemble since 1992 and is therefore the undisputed longest-serving member. And every time you get stage fright before the curtain opens. “Then the text disappears for a moment, but comes back immediately,” says Schad, who plays the adventure-hungry vacationer Heiner in the comedy, who first has to cope with a disappointment together with his friend Günther (Rolf Scholten): There is beer in Hawaii, but no bowling alley.

Grandpa Theo is welcome to go to the double room

But there are mountains, that’s what Mr. Starnberger is convinced of, so he has leather pants and an alpine hat with him and is happy that Grandpa Theo (Günter Erner) also wants to be entertained on the family trip. Because too much togetherness with his wife Sabine, no, that doesn’t have to be the case. Grandpa Theo can stay in a double room with him, which saves money. Everything was expensive enough anyway, and next year I would like to go to the Allgäu again. The Starnbergers on stage are siblings in real life, another reason why this ensemble doesn’t run out of steam: the love of theater is inherited.

The ensemble has been rehearsing since July

“I’ve known this since I was a child and used to go to performances with my parents as a child,” says Matthias Winzen (36), whose family has always been involved in the Catholic community. While the electrical engineer appeared on stage for the first time last year, his sister Ulla has been part of the ensemble since 2005. “Yes, you grow into it,” says the 39-year-old, adjusting her straw hat because the complaining is about to continue. About Grandpa Theo, the other guests, and especially about the husband, who here in the South Seas paradise only dreams of his dull mountains.

More from Neviges and Tönisheide

Since the beginning of July, the amateur ensemble has been rehearsing twice a week, from Monday, October 28th, then every day until the big day, the premiere. Andrea Pannen, who has been with the band since 1994 and is directing again, chose the piece, among other things, “because there is so much action, we also need a lot of bandages.” Luckily, of course, only on stage, nothing more will be revealed here. It’s best to get your tickets quickly, as all four performances are already well booked.
