“I was never asked if I could play for Barcelona for free”

Lionel Messi left Barcelona this summer, under somewhat dramatic circumstances. He wanted to stay in the club and the club wanted to keep him. But the economy stopped and Messi was recruited to PSG.

In an interview with Spanish Sport, Messi talks about leaving the club, where he was for over 20 years.

Now, a few months later, however, it seems to have become a bit frosty between Messi and Barcelona president Joan Laporta. The Argentine is disappointed with how the whole thing has been handled.

– Nobody asked me if I could play for free. At the same time, I think what the President is saying is unreasonable. It hurt me, because he does not have to say so. It makes people doubt in a way I do not deserve. I lowered my salary by more than 50 percent without hesitation. We wanted to help the club as much as possible, he says.
